As was the case with so many student-athletes of his day, John Pausic's collegiate career was put on hold by World War II. Returning home after serving with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater of operations, the McKeesport, Pa. native enrolled at West Liberty and quickly established himself as a standout performer on the football field and baseball diamond.
Known to Hilltopper fans as the "McKeesport Mauler" for his hard-charging running style, Pausic was a four-year football letterman and two-time All-WVIAC selection on Coach Joe Bartell's post-War gridiron powerhouses. Pausic also made his presence felt with the West Liberty baseball program as a slugging first baseman. He hit .390 as a three-year letterman and also earned acclaim as a standout with several local semi-pro squads.
After graduating from WLSC in 1949, Pausic spent most of the next four decades as a highly-successful teacher and coach at the high school level. At various times, he coached football, basketball, baseball and track. Pausic retired in 1982.
