John Craig was an All-WVIAC and All-America wrestler on the hilltop who went on to establish himself as one of the top high school wrestling coaches in the state of Ohio.
A 3-time WVIAC champion who won back-to-back WVIAC Most Valuable Wrestler Awards, Craig capped his illustrious collegiate career as an NAIA All-American in 1972. After graduating, he began his teaching and coaching career at Hillsboro (Ohio) City Schools before returning to the Ohio Valley in 1975 as head coach at Steubenville (Ohio) High School.
His accomplishments at the time of his induction were already legendary. Honored as the 1989 Ohio Division II Coach of the Year, Craig had led five of his Big Red wrestling squads to OVAC Tournament championships with many of them going on to compete at the collegiate level. Steubenville was unbeaten in dual mat action for three straight years (1987-89) and had a dual meet record of 170-52-3 during Craig's time at the helm.
