A highly-successful teacher and coach for several decades in the Ohio Valley area, Jay Circosta got his start as a football and baseball standout on the hilltop. After graduating from West Liberty in 1968, The Shadyside, Ohio native began his coaching and teaching career at Woodsfield (Ohio) High School as a football and baseball assistant. Circosta was promoted to head coach in 1971 and a legend was born. At the time of his induction, Circosta had been at the helm of the Woodsfield – and its consolidation, Monroe Central – football program for a quarter-century and put up some astronomical numbers.
Circosta had five unbeaten teams, highlighted by a 1976 Ohio state championship run. In all, 14 of his 25 teams won eight or more games while walking away with nine Ohio Valley Athletic Conference and 10 Pioneer Valley Athletic Conference titles. In addition to his football success, Circosta also posted a 135-116 record in 14 seasons as head baseball coach.
Also a member of the OVAC Hall of Fame, Circosta received multiple Coach of the Year Awards from the OVAC, PVC and Eastern District. He was also a six-time Ohio Valley Dapper Dan honoree and was selected to coach the Ohio squad in three OVAC Charity All-Star Games.
