George Kohelis was an All-West Virginia Conference standout in two sports at West Liberty during the mid-1960s, excelling in football along with track and field.
A 2-year starter on the Hilltopper football team in 1964 and 1965, Kohelis served as team captain and earned All-WVIAC laurels as a defensive tackle during his senior season in 1965. He was also a 3-year letterman in track where he was the 1965 WVIAC shot put champion, setting a school record in the event.
After graduating from West Liberty, Kohelis embarked on a lengthy career as a teacher, coach and administrator in the Ohio Valley. He started at Smithfield High School but wound up spending more than three decades at Weir (W.Va.) High School, where he coached football and track before being appointed athletic director and ultimately serving as principal for several years.
