One of the most dominant pitchers in West Liberty's long and storied baseball history, Floyd "Lefty" Chambers starred on the diamond and the basketball court for the Hilltoppers during the early 1930s.
A hard-throwing southpaw, Chambers won every game he started on the mound for West Liberty from 1930-33 with the exception of an exhibition contest against the minor-league Wheeling Stogies. That loss to the Stogies was the Hilltoppers' only loss over that span.
Chambers was just as successful on the basketball court. Playing for legendary head coach Harry Sweeney, he helped lead West Liberty to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1931 and 1932.
After graduating from West Liberty, Chambers coached briefly at Bethany High and Wellsburg High Schools before going into business with the Chambers and James Funeral Home. Floyd and his son, Fred – also a member of the West Liberty Hall of Fame – were the only father/son combo named to the All-Time All-West Virginia Conference Baseball Team.
