West Liberty’s only two-time West Virginia Conference Defensive Player of the Year, E.J. Burt was one of the premier defensive ends in WVIAC history.
The Akron, Ohio native led the league in quarterback sacks and tackles-for-loss in each of his final two seasons (1999 and 2000) to earn back-to-back WVIAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. He still holds the school’s career records of 47 quarterback sacks and 74.5 tackles-for-loss.
After graduating from West Liberty, Burt was the 2002 af2 Lineman of the Year after recording a staggering 27.5 sacks for the Cape Fear (N.C.) Wildcats, believed to be a single-season pro football record. He enjoyed a six-year career in the Arena Football League with Orlando, Chicago, Philadelphia and Utah.
An AFL All-Rookie Team honoree in 2003 and a second-team All-AFL pick in 2005, Burt led the league in forced fumbles twice and ranked among the AFL sack leaders throughout his career.
