Don DeLongo was an All-WVIAC football standout and three-sport letterman at West Liberty in the mid-1950s who went on to a long and distinguished high school coaching career.
DeLongo came to the hilltop as a non-traditional student following a 4-year stint in the U.S. Army, where he was named to the first Inter-Service All-Star Football Team in 1950. Arriving at West Liberty in 1954 after a year at Ohio University, DeLongo was a two-way standout on the Hilltopper football team for the next three seasons. He had a school-record 90-yard interception return in 1954 and was named captain of the 1956 All-WVIAC Team. DeLongo was also a key member of West Liberty's track and baseball teams.
After graduation, DeLongo entered the coaching profession and spent the next four decades patrolling the high school sidelines. He coached at Powhatan (Ohio), Barnesville (Ohio) and Beallsville (Ohio) high schools, highlighted by a three-year run at Beallsville that saw the Blue Devils go 24-3-1 and win two OVAC championships.
