Despite having his academic and athletic careers interrupted by World War II, Chester Grossi was a standout lineman on Coach Joe Bartell's 1941 and 1946 West Virginia Conference championship football teams before going on to a legendary career as a high school and college official.
The Weirton, W.Va. native played his first two seasons on the hilltop before leaving to join the war effort as a B-29 Flight Engineer in the U.S. Air Force. Grossi returned to campus for his final two years, graduating in 1947, and went on to earn a master's degree from West Virginia University. He served as a teacher and coach at Weir (W.Va.) High School for 14 years before entering the investment and insurance business.
Grossi also served as a highly-respected football and basketball official in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference and WVIAC for 45 years before hanging up his whistle for the final time in 1988. Active in numerous projects benefitting civic and charity groups in his local community, Grossi spent 21 years as a Divisional Manager for Waddell and Reed, Inc. before serving as a Divisional Manager for Offerman and Co., Inc. until his retirement.
