Carlin Dodrill was a three-sport standout – football, baseball and basketball – at West Liberty State College during the early 1930s who went on to spend the better part of four decades as a highly-regarded teacher, coach and administrator.
The Follansbee, W.Va. native was a four-year football standout from 1931-34 on the hilltop, straddling the Harry Sweeney and Joe Bartell coaching eras, and also played two seasons of basketball and two seasons of baseball.
He spent one year working at Weirton Steel following his 1935 graduation before beginning his career in education at Follansbee High School. Dodrill was Follansbee's head baseball coach from 1950-68, head basketball coach from 1946-62 and an assistant football coach from 1946-63. He also served as a basketball assistant from 1962-69. The highlight of his coaching career was winning the 1956 state baseball championship.
Dodrill was the first athletic director at Brooke High School, following the 1968 consolidation of Follansbee, Wellsburg and Bethany High Schools, and served in that role until his retirement in 1974.
