Carl Fodor was one of the most versatile athletes to hit the West Liberty State College campus during the late 1950s, playing key roles on WVIAC championship squads in football and men's basketball before embarking on a lengthy coaching and teaching career.
Fodor was a two-way starter at offensive end and defensive tackle on Coach Joe Bartell's final WVIAC championship team in 1956 and earned All-WVIAC honors following the 1958 season. In basketball, Fodor was a three-year letterman who helped lead Coach Ollie Olson's 1957 squad to a school-record 23 wins and a WVIAC Tournament championship with an upset of nationally-ranked West Virginia Tech. Fodor was honored as the college's Most Outstanding Athlete during his senior year.
Fodor began his teaching and coaching career at Weir (W.Va.) High School in 1959, coaching the Red Riders' football, wrestling and track teams. His teams won three state wrestling championships with 11 individual champions while compiling a 77-29 dual meet record during his tenure. He spent six seasons as head football coach, posting a pair of 8-2 records, and led his track teams to a 34-4 dual meet mark along with a 1965 regional title.
After hanging up his coaching whistle, Fodor moved into education administration as a school principal and assistant schools superintendent and served a transit manager for Weirton Transit before his retirement.
