A multi-sport athlete at West Liberty during the late 1920s and early 1930s, Carl Duncan has the distinction of being the first Hilltopper to sign a major league baseball contract.
The versatile athlete excelled in football, basketball and baseball during his time on the hilltop and served as captain of each of those teams at various times. An outstanding halfback who lined up in the same backfield with record-setting fullback Bob Campiglio, Duncan is best remembered for his exploits as an All-WVIAC baseball star. He was named to the 50th Anniversary All-Time All-West Virginia Conference Team in 1974.
Duncan signed with the St. Louis Cardinals after graduation and played two seasons with the Huntington Redbirds of the Middle Atlantic League. In later years, he was a familiar face with the H.H. Wilsons, a semi-pro team in the Ohio Valley.
The Wheeling, W.Va. resident worked for Hazel-Atlas Glass Co. before being called into the service for World War II. After the war, he worked for Republic Steel until his retirement in 1970.
